Domino Mail Journaling

This topic provides information about setting up Journaling from a Domino Server without the use of a Mail Journaling Template. If your company is currently using the Mail Journaling Template, we recommend you migrate to the new Domino Mail Journaling method. Please contact your customer service representative for more information about migrating to the new method.

Prerequisites

The following are the prerequisites for setting up the Domino Server:

  • IBM Domino Server version 8.0 or higher versions

  • IBM Domino Administrator version 8.0 or higher versions, connected to the server

  • Ensure you have Configuration Settings document for your server(s)

  • Ensure all users Internet address are set

  • Outline server mail rules you want to implement for Journaling.

Server Mail Rules

You must create mail rules that determine which messages to journal. You can create a rule that journal all messages. You can also create granular rules to journal only certain types of messages such as messages from specific employees to specific customers. Make some determination about the types of messages you want to journal before you begin configuring your mail rules.

Configuration Settings Document

Configuration Settings document governs mail routing for a Domino server. The server mail rules you use to define Journaling are configured within the Configuration Settings document for each server on which you want to journal messages. It is recommended that you use a single Configuration Settings document. You can configure a single document for all your Domino servers, different documents for different groups of servers, or a document for each server.

Users Internet Email Addresses

For sending mails to outbound Internet users, the sender's email address must be set as per the MIME format i.e. RFC 821/822. When converting a Notes message for SMTP transfer, the Router replaces the Notes address of the sender with an Internet address. If the Router cannot determine the sender's Internet address, either from the InetFrom field of the Notes message, or the Internet address field of the user's Person document, it constructs an Internet address by combining the user's Notes name with Domino domain and Internet domain information. The rules for constructing the sender's Internet address are specified in the Global domain document.

Note

If your server has a Global domain document configured, please be sure to set the Internet address lookup field to Enabled on the Conversions tab.

It is recommended that you set the Internet email address for all users. Please refer to the Domino Administration Help for more information.

Note

Leaving the Internal Domain Names field blank is not allowed when editing a content source.
